Introduction to the World of Percussion

Join Chetham’s percussion tutor Andrea Vogler live in her home studio for a behind-the-scenes look at instruments in the percussion family. Discover how to make the sounds on your favourite film soundtracks and what to do with the more unusual instruments in your school percussion trolley in this interactive tour of the world of percussion.

Create A Piece

Let’s get creative!  Using any instruments you may have in school, or a collection of everyday items such as spoons and chairs, you will work with our facilitator in a 45 to 90-minute session to gather ideas before putting them together and performing your masterpiece.  The theme of the piece can be anything, why not create an anthem for your school or get away from it all on a journey to Outer Space?

Live Instrumental Demo and Q&A with Chetham’s Students

Once our students are back we can bring some live music into your school!  Through either Teams or Zoom, a 30 to 45-minute concert featuring our talented young soloists will enthral your students.  If you are equipped with video and microphone equipment then we can also incorporate a short Q&A session.

Curriculum themed sessions

Working on the Romans? Volcanoes? Outer space? Syllables? Telling the time?  We can provide a practical online music session tailored to support your curriculum learning.

Kitchen Sink Percussion Workshop

Live Zoom workshops designed to work on kitchen instruments / random percussion. You need everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink!!  This stand-alone workshop is linked to a YouTube flash mob samba reggae; participants get an introduction to the instruments and techniques used in samba, then learn the lines to play along with the track.  This makes it suitable for any size group, even smaller numbers.  Sessions can be between 45 and 90 minutes in length.

Traditional Samba Workshop

Live Zoom workshops designed for schools who have access to samba instruments.  This fun percussion workshop will help children develop musical skills and teamwork.  Participants get an introduction to the instruments and techniques used in samba, then learn the lines to play along with a track.  This makes it suitable for any size group, even smaller numbers. Sessions can be between 45 and 90 minutes long.

Mindful Listening

A workshop focussing on listening activities around mindful listening, developing graphic scores and other creative responses. It encourages people to listen carefully and be in the moment, as well as being aware of and responding creatively to the world around them.

Song-Writing Workshop

Feeling adventurous and creative? We can bring a song-writing workshop to you! You will work with our facilitator to gather and form ideas and then put the full song together in a second session! The theme of the song can be anything, why not create an individualised anthem.

From Junk to Funk

Come and join our recycling music workshop as we go back to basics and make music out of scrap! Find creative new ways of making your own instrument from a variety of everyday objects and then take part in our brand-new band as we tell stories, write new music and play, sing, scrape, strike and shake!

Arts Award

Why not think about using this time to earn an Arts Award? You can do an Arts Award from home during lockdown! We can help you with that. Our workshops can provide some of the content and we are able to advise and guide you about Arts Awards for your students. Contact us on joinin@chethams.com for more information.

We are grateful to our generous supporters, without whom none of our activity would be possible.  Learn more at Funders | Chetham’s Outreach
